8 Signs of Dysfunctional Management

Great businesses depend on people, ideas, communication, and vision to drive consistently desirable outcomes. When your management team isn’t effectively driving performance, the entire business can suffer. Knowing the signs to look for can help you identify and correct dysfunction in your management staff, clearing the way for consistent future growth and success. 1. “Because I said so.” – If your employees find themselves completing tasks just because management said so, it’s a sign of fear based leadership that will produce more problems than it solves. This type of behavior will never fuel your employees to work their hardest, and instead could even lead to employee paralysis as your workers begin to fear repercussions for their actions.

2. Passive Aggressive – When management staff routinely shows up late to meetings, forget to share important information, or rely on excuses for their poor performance, this can be characterized as passive aggressive behavior. This indicates that the employee is apathetic about their job.

3. Narcissistic – When a manager acts solely with the goal of advancing his or her own career, it’s a sign of a problem. Management is supposed to support workers on the front lines, and their success should be measured by their ability to drive performance.

4. Non-Committal – Employees in a dysfunctional environment can’t effectively switch gears every week. When your management changes strategies on a constantly changing basis, focus becomes muddied and even lost entirely by the people they manage.

5. Turn-Over – If you find your employees don’t seem to last very long, that’s a pretty good indicator that something’s wrong. A revolving door is a Band-Aid by management to cover up for a much bigger problem.

6. Division – If management is driving division amongst the workplace, you are staring dysfunction in the eye. Creating division within teams is often done with negative intent and may be used to cover up larger problems and to protect agendas that never yield improved performance.

7. Politics – When management acts according to their own political agenda, the overall mission of the business suffers. Competition between employees becomes the focus rather than what’s good for the company as a whole.

8. Miscommunication – Communication between management staff is integral to the understanding of the big issues at your company. When leadership has to get information from the rank and file employees, something is definitely wrong.
